Homemade Ice Cream In a Bag

You scream, I scream, We all scream for Ice Cream! This is the perfect family fun, kid friendly way to satisfy those ice cream cravings. The bonus part of this recipe is everyone gets their own bag, the same amount of ice cream and the they can customize it to their liking. You will have just won mother, neighbor, aunt or whatever of the year with this ice cream in a bag recipe. It is hands on and so much fun. Plus ice cream in a bag tastes amazing!

Seriously, the kids ask for ice cream like every night. I love getting them involved and they love making it. Letting them share a bag or make their own takes all the fighting out of what kind to have as well. Making your own homemade ice cream gives you control over the ingredients and what you want in your ice cream bag. And you can make this when you need ice cream in a pinch for desserts like Skillet Brownies, White Chocolate Blondes, and Pizookies!

Easy Ice Cream in a Bag Ingredients

Besides the bags, this recipe uses the same kind of ingredients you would normally use for ice cream.

  • Gallon-sized ziplock bags: You may not want to buy the generic and go for the name brand. You do not want these to leak or not seal properly.
  • Heavy cream half and half or whole milk: The best dairy product for homemade ice cream will be the ones with the most fat, so shoot for heavy cream or half and half.
  • Sugar: White sugar will sweeten the dairy so it tastes luscious.
  • Vanilla: This will add the flavor and is a base flavor, you can customize it or change it.
  • Ice: You will need enough ice to fill the gallon bag up halfway. You can probably just use ice from your own freezer.
  • Rock salt: Look for rock or ice cream salt where you find table salt at your local store.

Let’s Make Ice Cream in a Bag!

The more it is shaken and moved around the faster it’ll freeze.

  1. First Bag: In a gallon-sized ziplock bag add the ice and salt.
  2. Second Bag: In another gallon-sized bag add the heavy cream.
  3. Sugar: Add in the sugar and shake the bag.
  4. Flavor: Add in the vanilla and shake.
  5. Zip it: Seal the bag completely so that the salt will not get into the bag and place it in the bag with the ice.
  6. Make it: Shake the bag for about 5 minutes or until frozen.

Why Ice Cream in a Bag Works

This fun ice cream recipe is also a science lesson in disguise.

  • The Science behind the goodness: The key ingredient to making ice cream is the salt. The salt lowers the temperature at which ice melts. Just like how many cities use salt to melt ice on roads or sidewalks faster. As the ice melts it needs the absorb heat to continue to melt. The ice will draw the heat from the ice cream ingredients, allowing the ice cream mixture to absorb the cold from the ice, freezing it.
  • Shaking: Even shaking the bag helps in this science experiment. Shaking allows the transfer of heat to happen and also creates air in the ice cream mixture making it nice and creamy!

The Best Ice Cream in a Bag Tips and Tricks

Make summertime that much more fun and keep the ingredients on hand for endless fun.

  • Bags: You can use a smaller quart bag for the ice cream mixture if you find that easier to have a smaller bag. Make sure you get as much air out as possible. And make sure it is sealed properly. I highly recommend using the name-brand bags for this activity as I have found they are a bit more durable and reliable. You can double bag it if you desire too. It isn’t as much fun when the bag breaks.
  • It will get cold: Holding bags of ice will get cold for little fingers. Play hot potato and pass the bag around to help relieve the cold and to add an extra element of fun. Kids can also wear oven mittens or winter gloves to keep their fingers warm.
  • Time: The amount of time it takes to get the right consistency you desire will vary. It can freeze as fast as 5 minutes or take up to 15. The more you shake it the faster it will freeze. Eat straight from the bag, place in a bowl, or put into a container and place the freezer to harden a bit more.
  • Salt: While rock salt is ideal for keeping the salt from getting into your ice cream, any salt will do. This has been made successfully with table salt even.
  • Variations: Make this dairy-free by using full-fat coconut milk or coconut cream.
  • Flavors: Try different flavors by using different extracts such as almond, maple, or mint. Make chocolate ice cream by stirring in chocolate syrup.
  • Mix-ins: Once the ice cream is done, stir in your favorite mix-ins. Try crushed cookies, mini M&M’s, any chopped candy bar, peanut butter, sprinkles, nuts, or fruit.

5 Minute Million Dollar Dip Recipe

Can I just say how much I love my readers and fans? I hope you know how much I appreciate all of your amazing comments and support in keeping this blog going. I especially love when readers send me messages and recipes that they want me to try. This recipe was sent to me from a reader telling me that I have to try it!  With it being only 5 ingredients and taking 5 minutes to make, I couldn’t wait to make it!

This dip has mayonnaise, green onions, cheddar cheese, and bacon bits. If you are looking to substitute the mayonnaise you can use greek yogurt, or even sour cream, but the mayonnaise is a key ingredient in bringing this dip all together. I loved all of the ingredients in this dip and the slivered almonds were my favorite part! They added the perfect crunch to this dip.  It is a MUST make for your next watch party or gathering. Everyone won’t be able to get enough of it! You will quickly see why it is called a Million Dollar Dip!

Ingredients for Million Dollar Dip

With just a few simple ingredients you can create some major deliciousness!

  • Green Onions: Their mild taste and crunchy texture are perfect in this dip!
  • Cheddar Cheese: For the best results, use freshly shredded cheese.  Shredded cheese in a bag won’t mix as well with this dip and the flavor isn’t as bright.
  • Mayonnaise: Use your favorite brand since this is the base of the entire dip.
  • Real Bacon Bits: Pre-cooked bacon works great and adds to the ease of prep for this already easy dip.
  • Slivered Almonds: These slivered almonds give the dip a nutty flavor without overwhelming each bite.

How to Make Million Dollar Dip

This dip honestly tastes so good, your friends and family will think it took a lot more effort to put together. Little do they know it only takes 2 quick steps to create!

  1. Mix Together Ingredients: Add green onions, cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, bacon bits, and slivered almonds to a small bowl. Mix until fully combined.
  2. Chill and Enjoy: Refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Serve with your favorite crackers.

Million Dollar Dip Quick Tips

Upgrade your dip with just a few quick and easy tips!

  • Cheese: Freshly shredded cheddar works best in this recipe. Packaged cheese typically lacks the flavor and texture that fresh cheese has. You can substitute cheddar for aged Gouda or Gruyere.
  • Mayonnaise: You can substitute mayo for sour cream or Greek yogurt, but I have found that mayonnaise works best to achieve a perfectly creamy texture.
  • Almonds: You can chop your almonds into smaller pieces for bite-sized texture.
  • Flavor Additions: Add in garlic, homemade ranch or Italian seasoning for an extra burst of flavor in your dip!

What to Serve With 5 Minute Million Dollar Dip

I love using bigger crackers like Ritz for this dip, but it also tastes amazing with tortilla chips and pretzels! Kettle chips are also a great pairing with their thicker texture and bite. You can make some of my quick and easy air fryer potato chips for a snack match made in heaven!

Storing Million Dollar Dip

Storing dips is just as easy as making them. I love having dips on hand for when I get late night munchies because you can eat them straight out of the fridge! Your dip will stay good for up to 4 days in an airtight container.

Cooking fish in an air fryer is one of the best ways to create the crispiest outsides and tender delicate insides. Try these tried and true air fryer fish recipes soon, Perfect Air Fryer Shrimp, Salmon, and Cod!

Air fryer fish sticks with french fries and tartar sauce.

Fish Sticks in Air Fryer

When you think of fish sticks does your mind go back to those boxed frozen fish sticks that were tasteless and rubbery? These homemade fish sticks are nothing like the nostalgic fish of your growing up years. Made from scratch these fish sticks are perfectly seasoned, and cooked to absolute perfection in the air fryer. They will come out tender, flakey and crispy, just like a fish stick should! And the flavor is impeccable.

Similar to my Fish and Chips recipe, this will have all the flavor but without the added fat from frying. If you have not gotten on the air fryer band wagon yet, the time is now. It creates that unique crispy outside and scrumptious insides without the oil and usually a lot faster. These homemade fish sticks are better than anything you could ever buy from the store. You can control the seasonings and size, making this a go to family dinner you will love.

Ingredients for Breaded Fish Sticks in Air Fryer

Super easy and absolutely delicious, you are going to love this! Air fryer fish sticks are easy to make and have an incredible taste. Your family is going to enjoy these fish sticks time after time.

  • Cod: Fresh or frozen cod that has been thawed will both work, slice the cod into strips.
  • Salt and pepper: Add to taste.
  • Flour: All-purpose flour is all you need to help coat the fish.
  • Eggs: Mix the eggs up thoroughly to coat the fish the best.
  • Salt: Adds flavor to the batter.
  • Panko: A lot lighter and crispier than bread crumbs, you will love the crunch they create.
  • Grated parmesan: You want the tiny grated parmesan like you can buy off the shelf in the store. Shredded parmesan won’t stick as well.
  • Old bay seasoning: Classic fish flavoring that is sold almost everywhere. Look for it with the spices.
  • Garlic powder: Adds incredible flavor, perfect with the cod and old bay seasoning.
  • Olive oil spray if needed: Use an oil spray, not an aresol, they can ruin the inside of your air fryer.

How to Make Fish Sticks in an Air Fryer

Adjust the seasonings to your liking! Create your own fish stick using seasonings and egg wash to make the best air fryer sticks yet!

  1. Season the fish: Salt and pepper the cod strips.
  2. Breading: Create a breading station for the fish. In one bowl add the flour. Take a second bowl and whisk together the eggs and salt. In the last bowl add the Panko, parmesan cheese, old bay seasoning, and garlic powder.
  3. Dip: First, dip the cod in the flour, then the egg, and lastly the Panko mix.
  4. Air Fry: Spray the bottom of your basket with olive oil. Place the fish in the basket of your air fryer. Cook at 400 degrees for 10 minutes. Continue to cook for 3-5 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 145 degrees.

The Best Air Fryer Fish Stick Tips

Making fish sticks from scratch means you can control the seasoning to make it just like you want. Mix and match these tips and variations of air fryer fish sticks for the perfect dinner.

  • Fish: In this recipe, I used cod which a firm mild-flavored fish, perfect for adding seasonings and flavorings. Other fish that will work here are other white fish, such as tilapia, pollock, and haddock.
  • Fresh or Frozen: You can use either fresh or frozen fish for this homemade fish stick recipe. If you use frozen thaw it overnight in the fridge before using.
  • Pat dry: To help the breading stick, pat your fish sticks dry before beginning.
  • Spray: I like to lightly spray with a non-propellant oil spray, the inside of the basket, and the fish sticks to help give it that extra bit of crunch.
  • Panko: Using panko over bread crumbs will create that light and crispy crunch that pairs beautifully with the delicate fish.
  • Air Frying: Every air fryer cooks a bit differently, it’s important to know how yours cooks. Fish is done when the internal temperature reaches 145 degrees. You can pull the fish once it hits 140 as the internal temperature will continue to rise as it rests. Do not overcook your fish sticks or they will become rubbery.
  • Cut and space: Cut the fish into equal pieces for even cooking. Leave space between the fish sticks so the air can circulate and cook them at the same rate.

What to Serve with Fish Sticks

Fish sticks are a nostalgic childhood favorite. Along with foods like Mac and Cheese, Corn Dogs, and Chicken Nuggets. And now you can make them healthier and taste so much better than what you remember, just like those other kid favorites. Making a dish that is healthier and better for my family is always a win. Especially when they love how much it tastes. Serve this up with a few stellar side dishes to make a complete meal the whole family is going to love!

How to Store Homemade Fish Sticks

Place cooked fish on a parchment-lined cookie sheet and place in a 175-200 degree oven while the other fish sticks cook.
