Honey Baked Glazed Ham

Lately I have been craving ham. Isn’t that weird? I couldn’t wait to bake this ham just so I could eat it with my family and have leftovers. I have been eating ham sandwiches almost every day and I can’t seem to get enough of it. This baby has been having some weird cravings. From fruit, to ham. Pretty opposite if you ask me!

A lot of people ask me questions on how to bake the perfect ham. It is pretty simple but there are a few tricks to get your ham to taste fantastic. My favorite glaze to use is a simple honey glaze and it gives the ham a perfect sweet flavor. Here are a few tips that I go by when cooking my ham.

What you Need to Cook Honey Brown Sugar Ham

Honey Glazed Ham is a one of my favorite meals during the holidays! I love the smell of it baking in the oven, the juicy first cut and the warmth it brings in our home and our hearts! It is a comforting meal that is sure to please everyone gathered around your table.

  • Ham: about 5 pounds big and precooked.
  • Honey: for a sweet, sticky glaze.
  • Butter: combines and melts in with the sweeter ingredients.
  • Dark corn syrup: a great thickener and sweet taste.
  • Brown sugar: tastes a bit like toffee and turns into a caramel taste when melted with butter.
  • Whole cloves: this is a strong and sweet with a little bitterness to it.

How to Cook a Precooked Ham

This ham is a precooked ham that is purchased at our local grocery store. If you choose a larger ham simply double the glaze mixture to have enough to cover over your ham. This honey glazed ham is one of the most tender and juicy hams you will ever have. Sweet, and savory honey ham will be your show stopping meal on Christmas Day.

Simple ingredients for this simple recipe that doesn’t take long to prepare and bake. Every slice comes out juicy and tender with a beautiful golden brown color. This honey ham glazed is a tried and true favorite and will become your family tradition soon enough.

  1. Let your ham rest: Take the ham out of the refrigerator and allow it to rest 30 minutes before cooking. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
  2. Cook glaze mixture: Prepare the glaze by heating honey, butter, dark corn syrup, and brown sugar in a medium saucepan on medium low heat.
  3. Prepare the ham: Line a 9×13 inch pan with aluminum foil. If scoring the ham, lightly score the top into diamond shapes and place the ham in the pan. If using whole cloves, put them in between the lines you scored, but remove before cutting and eating.
  4. Brush the glaze on and bake the ham: Brush the glaze on top and create a foil tent over the ham. Bake the ham according to how many pounds you have. Usually 15 minutes per pound. Brush the glaze over the ham every 15 minutes.
  5. Broil the ham: Once the ham is cooked, remove the foil tent and caramelize the top by turning the oven to broil and letting the ham get dark for about 3-5 minutes. Remove the ham from the oven and pour remaining glaze over the top.

How Do you Know When your Ham is Cooked?

Most hams are already precooked. Essentially you are warming up your ham in the oven. The thickest part of the ham needs to be cooked to at least 145 degrees Fahrenheit according to the proper food safety temperature.

Make This a Complete Meal

This Honey Glazed Ham has all the feels around the holidays. It is a classic tradition in most homes and carried on from generation to generation. I am a tradition kind-of girl and love this Honey Glazed Ham with a few of my favorite sides here:

Tips for making a The Best Honey Glazed Ham

Classic honey glazed ham is simple and easy to make with little ingredients. This sweet glaze is so good and tenderizes the ham while baking.

These tips will help you make your holiday dinner what everyone is raving about. Golden, tender ham that is juicy when sliced thin is pure heaven this holiday season. Try these tips to perfect your holiday dinner this year!

  • Picking your ham: pre-cooked and bone in is one type of ham or precooked without the bone. With these choices the ham is already juicy and great for left overs.
  • Scoring your ham: Before I cook my ham, I score the top in diamond shapes. This not only adds a beautiful presentation, but allows the glaze to seep into the ham. You can also put whole cloves into the cracks, but remove them before carving and eating.
  • Cutting the Ham:  Once your ham is fully cooked, it can be served at warm or cool temperatures but never straight out of the oven. Let the ham rest for about 10 minutes before cutting. And ham can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.’
  • Baking the ham: place your ham cut-side-down into your baking pan. This will help the meat stay juicy with the tinfoil over top.
  • Use aluminum foil: make sure to use aluminum foil or a cover over your honey glazed ham so it does not dry out.
  • Let your ham rest: after baking your ham, let it sit on the counter to rest. This is a great time to finish making and setting up your holiday dinner.
  • Serve with yellow mustard or spicy brown mustard at the table. You can also add a tablespoon of spicy mustard or honey mustard to the glaze for a hint of sweet and spicy flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are great questions to ask and will help you when making this honey glazed ham. It is so simple to make and comes together beautifully. Soon you will be cooking your very own honey glazed ham and enjoy your holiday dinner with your family. A delicious sweet honey glaze that gives your ham the perfect flavor!

  • Do I slice the ham before cooking? No, this is not recommended. You can score the outside of the ham but slicing the ham will dry it out.
  • How much ham per person? Usually it is about 1/2 pound of ham per person. If you are wanting left overs at the end estimate 1 pound per person when buying your ham.
  • How big of a ham should I buy? This is a great question for baking the ham. You may have several people coming but the important part is how big your pan is that will be baking it in. A 6 to 8 quart pot or 12 x 16 pan fits about a 6 to 7 pound ham.
  • Will a ham cook overnight? Yes! This is a great idea when needing more time for other things during the day. Simply preheat the oven to a 275 degrees. Follow the instructions for preparing and baking the honey glazed ham. Bake uncovered for 6 to 7 hours. While baking continue to spread the glaze over the ham.
  • Do you cover your ham? Yes, this is a great way to avoid your ham from over baking and becoming dry. At the end of baking the ham remove the aluminum foil and broil it for a crisp outer layer.
  • Should I glaze the ham before cooking? Yes! Brush the glaze mixture over top and into the ham as much and best that you can. Continue to glaze the ham throughout the baking process every 15 to 20 minutes for best results. When the ham is finished cooking brush the remainder of the glaze mixture and broil the top and outside layer of the ham. This will leave a caramelized look and texture on your ham.

Variations for Glazed Ham

This is a tried and true honey glazed ham favorite that we make year after year in our family. This Spiced Rub Brown Sugar Pineapple Glazed Ham or this Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Mustard Glazed Ham are other great ways to enjoy a classic ham recipe this holiday season. I love the traditional honey glazed ham recipe but there are some variations that can be made.

  • Sweetener: instead of honey try using maple syrup or add a little extra brown sugar.
  • Syrup: if you do not have dark corn syrup on hand, molasses works great in replace of it.
  • Spices: you can omit garlic clove if you would like. This is an optional ingredient and try cinnamon or nutmeg in replace of it.
  • Extra flavoring: add pineapple juice or apple cider over top. Even orange juice or cranberry juice for a fruitier flavor.

But I think english muffins are easier to eat, they aren’t so chewy which is perfect for little ones to eat. If you’ve always had these on bagels, give this version a try, I know you’re going to love it!

English Muffin Pizza Ingredients

The main ingredients for these is pretty basic. What you top them with is up to you and your family. Jarred pizza sauce is easy to find but it’s also easy to make your own and then you can freeze it for later use. Whatever you use, just make these fun pizzas tonight!

  • English Muffins: Use your favorite brand of english muffins.
  • Pizza Sauce: Buy your favorite or make your own
  • Mozzarella Cheese: Use fresh grated mozzarella for the best melting results.
  • Optional Toppings: pepperoni, mushrooms, olives, chopped basil

Assembling English muffin pizzas with various toppings.

Tips and Variations

If there was ever a recipe that was easy to vary, this would be it. Make these pizzas to your liking.  It’s one of those dinners where everyone is happy because they can everyone can put what they want on it. No fighting about what’s for dinner. Everyone is going to love this. Depending on your tastes, you can experiment mixing cheeses, meats and sauces. There are so many options! Good thing these are small, you can make and try them all! Here are some ideas for perfect pizzas.

  • Cheese: Besides mozzarella, you can use cheddar, asiago, pepper jack, asiago, feta, and parmesan for starters
  • Sauces: Mix it up by using spaghetti sauce, pesto sauce, vodka sauce, sun-dried tomato basil, or alfredo
  • Meats: There are tons of options here, mini pepperoni, sausage, ham, bacon, bbq chicken, prosciutto, or salami.
  • Veggies:  We can get pretty wild here with these. Try peppers, onion, artichokes, spinach, pineapple, peppercinis, basil, garlic, or anything else you can think of. Veggies won’t cook all the way through before the pizzas are done so it’s a good idea to pre cook them partially before adding them to the pizzas.
  • English Muffins: There are lots of options for english muffins. You can use whole wheat, low carb, sourdough or plain. Even gluten free will work with these pizzas. Use what your family will eat best.
  • Toasty: If you like a toastier base,  broil the english muffins on the cookie sheet before topping. Place under the broiler for 1-3 minutes. Watch closely so you don’t burn them. This give the english muffin a nice crunchy base. It will also help keep the english muffin from getting too soft because of the sauce.

Freezing and Storing Mini English Muffin Pizzas

These pizzas are great for lunches or when ever hunger strikes and you need to feed the masses. Make a huge batch of these and freeze some for the days when you need a lunch, dinner or midnight snack that will certainly satisfy better than junk food!

  • Freeze: Make the english muffin pizzas and directed. Let cool completely on a wire rack, this keeps them from getting too soggy and soft on the bottom. Once they’ve cooled, wrap them individually in plastic wrap or foil and place in a freezer bag. Freeze for up to 3-4 months.
  • Freeze before Baking:  These can also be frozen before you bake them. Toast your english muffin, then top with desired toppings. Do not bake. Individually wrap the pizzas in plastic wrap or foil and place in a freezer safe bag. When ready to use remove from freezer and bake as directed below. Because they were not pre baked they might take a few more minutes to cook all the way through.
  • Reheat: Remove from freezer and take off the wrapping. Place on a cookie sheet and heat in the oven at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Check often to make sure they are heated through. These can also be reheated in the microwave. Place on a microwave safe plate with a paper towel on the bottom. Reheat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, checking to make sure it’s heated through.

Perfect Sautéed Brussel Sprouts with Bacon

Sautéed Brussel Sprouts with Bacon is side dish supremacy! Crisp tender Brussel sprouts tossed with crispy bacon and a drizzle of maple syrup is pure heaven.

Brussel Sprouts are a full flavored cute veggie that packs a nutritional punch. For more ways to use them try them in Creamy Parmesan Garlic Brussels Sprouts, Apple Bacon Brussel Sprouts Salad and Air Fryer Crispy Parmesan Brussel Sprouts.

Brussel sprouts with bacon and maple syrup in a white bowl.

Sautéed Brussel Sprouts

These are not your mother’s Brussel sprouts! Those were the days of steamed and boiled everything. It turned vegetables to bland mush. No wonder we didn’t like our veggies growing up! These are sautéed to a crisp outside, but still tender inside. Flavored with smoky, salty bacon and a splash of maple syrup for a sweet and salty flavor that is out of this world yummy! My whole family loved this flavorful side dish.

Besides bacon makes everything better! Cooking the Brussel sprouts in the bacon drippings caramelizes the sprouts to absolute perfection. The sprouts soak up the flavor and creates a deep nutty savory taste that pairs impeccably with the maple syrup. The maple syrup adds just enough deep sweet flavor that is not too sugary, it’s just right. This side dish comes together quickly too. Which is ideal when you need a gorgeous side dish in a pinch! This dish pairs perfectly with Steak, Chicken or Fish! Whatever you need it for, this is the recipe to use!

Ingredients for Easy Brussel Sprouts

These ingredients can’t get much simpler with only four ingredients! Easy and quick Brussel sprouts that are pure goodness! You can find all of these ingredients at your local grocery store if you don’t have them on hand. Brussel sprouts can be found separately or sometimes they can be found still connected to the stalk. If this is the case just cut the them off the stalk at the base. Rinse and pat dry your sprouts before sautéing.

  • Bacon: Chop the bacon before you cook it.
  • Brussel Sprouts: Cut the sprouts in half
  • Salt and Pepper: Just to taste
  • Maple Syrup: Use pure maple syrup for the best flavor

Sautéing Brussel Sprouts and Bacon

This is such a quick recipe to whip up. It’s best cooked right before serving, so plan accordingly. You don’t want to make this too far ahead, they can get mushy. Eating this as soon as it’s done cooking is the best, crispy bacon, tender Brussel sprouts and sweet maple syrup, so good!

  1. Cook: In a medium pan over medium high heat cook the bacon till crisp. Remove from the pan and place on a paper towel lined plate.
  2. Sauté: Keep the bacon drippings in the pan and add the Brussel sprouts. Sauté till crisp tender about 7-10 minutes.
  3. Add: Add the bacon back to the pan and drizzle with maple syrup. Cook for another minute stirring to coat. Serve immediately.

Pouring the maple syrup over the brussel sprouts and bacon.

Tips and Variations

These Brussel sprouts can’t get much better than this, they are so dang good! You can vary this to your liking and play with the flavors if you would like.

  • Add: If you want more flavor, you can add in chopped onion and garlic with the Brussel sprouts.
  • Faster:  You can chop up the Brussel sprouts into smaller pieces to sauté faster. They will cook faster so keep on eye on it and stir often.
  • Oil or Butter: If you need a bit more fat to sauté the Brussel sprouts in you can add a little bit of oil or butter. Either will work but I will say that butter adds a bit more flavor.
  • Size:  Brussel sprouts can really vary in size from tiny to huge. Try to get all the same sized sprouts or trim them to the same size so that they’ll cook at the same rate.
  • Lid: If you like your Brussel sprouts a bit more tender, start by covering the sprouts with a lid to give them a quick steam. This will about 4 to 5 minutes long. Then remove the lid and finish browning them to get that nice crispy outside. Cooking them with the lid on to start will trap in the heat and moisture and help tenderize them. But you’ll want to finish sautéing them to give them that perfect nutty flavor.
  • More Crunch:  If you want more crunch add chopped almonds or walnuts to the pan and sauté for about 2 to 3 minutes before adding the bacon and maple syrup.
  • Cheese:  Sprinkle with shredded parmesan for a salty nutty bite that goes wonderfully well with the bacon and syrup.
  • Syrup:  Feel free to add more syrup if you want a little bit more sweet. It’s all a matter of taste.

Benefits of Brussel Sprouts

Who knew but these mini looking heads of cabbage are extremely good for you! Another reason to add them to your recipes this season. Brussels sprouts are part of the vegetable family that includes broccoli and cabbage, a cruciferous vegetable. The flavors brought on from roasting can be described as savory, slightly nutty, and even a tad sweet, especially the smaller sized sprouts.

  • Vitamins: They are a super power house food with their high contents of vitamin C, and K and other minerals.Vitamin K is important for blood clotting and bone health. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps promote iron absorption and is involved in tissue repair and immune function.
  • Fiber: They are high in fiber which is good for gut health.
  • Antioxidants: They are best known for the high antioxidant compounds. Antioxidants reduce the oxidative stress in your cells and helps lower your risk of chronic disease.
  • Blood Sugars: Because of their low carb high fiber profile they can help keep blood sugars steady.
  • Healthy Fats:   According to Healthline, Brussels sprouts are one of the best plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids, with 135 mg of ALA in each half-cup (78-gram) serving of cooked Brussels sprouts. This is especially important if don’t eat much fish or foods high in omega 3.
  • Reduce Inflammation:  Because of their amazing properties they can reduce inflammation, which chronic inflammation can cause diseases and cancers.

More Amazing Side Dishes

Side dishes are the super sidekicks that can make superheroes out of ordinary dinners. They can even steal the show! Meals just aren’t complete without a stellar side dish. Whether it’s a fruit or veggie or both, they just add to your dinner. Pick from these favorites.

Cranberry Muffins

These Cranberry Muffins are the perfect blend of tart and sweet, light, fluffy and perfect for your morning breakfast. All you need is one bowl and 30 minutes to whip these babies up from start to finish.

Don’t miss our other yummy breakfast sweets! We love this Star Bread, which is GORGEOUS, this Fluffy French Toast, and these sticky sweet Sticky Buns.

Homemade Cranberry Muffins

I am not normally a sweets gal in the morning, but give me a sweet that’s balanced by a hint of tartness to balance things out and a smear of softened butter and I AM SOLD. These easy Cranberry Muffins are made in one bowl and come together in about 30 minutes, making breakfast (or snacks!) a cinch.

Tuck them into your kiddo’s lunch box, pop them into the microwave for a quick breakfast on the go, or just eat one when you need a quick snack fix.

Muffin batter in a glass bowl with cranberries on top.

Ingredients in Fresh Cranberry Muffins

  • Flour: We use all-purpose flour for these cranberry muffins, but you could also use gluten free flour that has a one-to-one ration with all-purpose flour.
  • Sugar: I don’t like my muffins to be overly sweet, but you do need a good amount of cane sugar regardless. We use 2/3 cup, if you like yours on the sweeter side, bump it up to 3/4 cup.
  • Baking powder: This is the leavened in our muffins, it’s needed to make the muffins rise. Make sure yours isn’t expired.
  • Salt: I love to add more salt that most people do. Not only does it help to balance out the sweetness, but I love to get a little salty bit in each bite.
  • Milk: You could use any kind of milk, this time around we used whole milk, but 2% or non-dairy milk would also work.
  • Butter: Our recipe calls for melted butter, make sure it’s unsalted so you can control the amount of salt that goes in the muffins.
  • Yogurt: Use whatever yogurt you have on hand! We used a sweetened greek yogurt, but plain yogurts or regular yogurt would work as well.
  • Egg: You need an egg to bind all the ingredients together. We like to use large organic eggs, but whatever you have on hand is fine.

Let’s Make Cranberry Muffins!

  1. Prepare the muffin tin: You have the option of using liners or spooning the batter directly into the muffin tin. I find cleanup easier by using the liners, but if you don’t have any on hand, no big deal.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: Whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together in a large bowl.
  3. Mix the wet ingredients: To minimize mess, I like to mix all of the wet ingredients in a large liquid measuring cup. First add the milk to you can measure it out properly. Whisk in the egg, yogurt, butter, and vanilla.
  4. Stir everything: Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients. Gently fold everything together. Drop the cranberries in, and again, gently fold in until they are combined.
  5. Bake! It’s really important that you don’t overfill the muffin tin. Only fill them 3/4 of the way full. If you have leftover batter, you can discard it, or use it to make one more muffin. Bake about 15-18 minutes and enjoy!

Dry ingredients for the muffin mix.

Substitutions, Tips and Tricks for Recipe Success

  • Add in a little bit of orange zest for citrusy flair. Same goes for lemon or lime zest!
  • Sprinkle the tops with sparkling sugar to add a little crunch and make them shine.
  • Use fresh cranberries, they are tart and won’t make the muffins soggy.
  • Don’t over mix the batter! The more you work the batter, the tougher the muffins will be. We want them light and fluffy!

Can I Make Cranberry Muffins Ahead of Time?

Absolutely! These will keep in an airtight container for 2-3 days. If you chill them, they will keep for five days.
