Deep Dish Pizza

Our family are huge pizza lovers and have it at least once a week. When I saw this recipe for Deep Dish Pizza I knew we had to try it! This recipe does not disappoint! It is loaded with thick flakey layers of crust and topped with gooey cheese and marinara. It is the BEST Deep Dish Pizza you will ever have!

We adapted the crust recipe from America’s Test Kitchen. For the crust we use a technique referred to as laminating the dough. It is where the pizza dough is rolled out then softened butter is spread on top of the dough then rolled again. It is similar to the method for making croissants and it is what gives the dough it’s flakiness which is authentic to Chicago style pizza!

Pizza Dough Ingredients:

This recipe makes two 9-inch pizzas and is perfect for pizza night! We left the pizza plain but feel free to top the pizza with your favorite vegetables, pepperoni or sausage!

  • Flour: We use unbleached all purpose flour in this recipe.
  • Cornmeal: Is added to give the dough a nice crunch and flavor.
  • Honey: Adds a hint of sweetness to the dough. Feel free to substitute granulated sugar as well.
  • Instant yeast: Activates the gluten and causes the dough to rise.
  • Butter: Melted butter is added to the pizza dough and gives the dough a nice buttery flavor.

Easy To Make Tomato Sauce:

The pizza is then topped with an easy homemade marinara sauce. I make the sauce and let it simmer while I am letting the dough rise.

  • Onions and garlic: Add lots of flavor to the sauce!
  • Crushed tomatoes: Are added feel free to use what you have diced tomatoes can be used as well.
  • Sugar: Gives the sauce a bit of sweetness and combats the acidity from the tomatoes.
  • Seasonings: Dried oregano, crushed red pepper flakes, salt and pepper to taste.

How to Make Deep Dish Pizza:

Add flour, cornmeal, salt, honey and yeast to a bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. Mix on low speed until incorporated. Add in water and 3 tbsp melted butter and mix on low until combined, 1-2 minutes. Increase the speed to medium and knead the dough until it is glossy and pulls aways from the sides of the bowl, 5 minutes. Coat a large bowl with olive oil and add the dough ball to the bowl turning to coat the dough ball in oil. Cover with plastic wrap and allow the dough to rise until doubled, about 60 minutes or so.

How to Laminate the Dough:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Coat two 9 inch cake pans with olive oil, set aside. Roll dough onto a dry work surface and roll into a 15 x 12 inch rectangle. Spread with 4 tbsp softened butter. Starting at the shortest end roll up dough into a cylinder. With the seam-side down, flatten the dough into a 18 by 4-inch rectangle. Cut the rectangle in half. Working with one half at a time, fold the dough into thirds like a business letter. Pinch the seams together to form a dough ball. Repeat with the remaining dough ball then transfer both balls of dough to the oiled bowl. Cover and let rise this time in the refrigerator to 45 minutes or until doubled in size.

How to Make the Easy Pizza Sauce:

Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium high heat. Add in onions and saute until softened, 4-5 minutes. Add in garlic and cook for an additional minute. Stir in the crushed tomatoes and spices and simmer for 20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Let’s Bake Some Pizza!

Transfer 1 dough ball on a dry work surface at a time and roll into a 13 inch disk. Transfer it to the prepared baking pan. Lightly press dough into pan and push dough up the sides about 1 inch. Sprinkle each pizza with 2 cups mozzarella cheese, 1 1/4 cup sauce and 2 tbsp parmesan. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown. Allow pizza to rest for 10 minutes before removing from pan and slicing.

Ingredients

Pizza Dough

  • 3 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp honey
  • 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 1/4 cup water
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • olive oil for coating pans

Easy Tomato Sauce

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 medium onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • salt and pepper to taste

Toppings

  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

Instructions

Easy Cowboy Caviar Ingredients:

Variations of Cowboy Caviar:

  • Beans: Instead of canned beans, try using dried beans. These are healthier with a lower sodium content and just as easy as the canned beans.

  • Onions: Mix together white, yellow or a few green onions to mix in to the caviar.

  • Make ahead: Mix together all the ingredients except for the avocado. Leave that out until you are ready to serve the appetizer. This will last covered in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days ahead of time.
  • Storing: If you are worried about storing for a long period of time, prepare each ingredient and set aside in their own individual containers. When ready to serve, place everything into a mixing bowl and gently stir it together, mixing and blending it well.
  • Leftover Ideas: This cowboy caviar is the best and will even benefit on a few other inspired recipes like an omelet, top any meat or toss it in a green salad for added flavoring.

Fall baking is one of my absolute favorite times to be in the kitchen. It’s Aimee Mars and preparing all the seasonal baked goods that fill my kitchen with warm and spicy scents are some of the most heartwarming. Just when the apples come into season I always have to prepare a batch of this delicious apple bread.

This really is the best apple bread recipe with its simplicity and super soft texture. Spread some creamy butter over a slice of warmed bread and you’ll be in fall heaven.

What Are the Best Apples for Making Apple Bread?

When baking it’s best to choose a tart and crisp apple version instead of a sweet one. This helps to balance the flavor so the apple bread isn’t overly sweet. The best options are Honeycrisp or Granny Smith. These apples can be found year-round too if you’re looking to make this bread outside of the fall season.

Can You Freeze Apple Bread?

Yes. In order to freeze the bread let it cool completely before wrapping it in plastic wrap, aluminum foil, or a freezer bag. If using foil or plastic wrap double wrap it to ensure no air gets in.

Do the Apples Have to be Peeled?

Yes. Unfortunately, the peel will begin to separate from the apple during the baking process that will not only create air pockets but also an unappetizing texture. To peel the apples quickly I prefer to use a potato peeler and then just slice them into chunks using a knife.

The simple ingredients in this apple bread recipe are all pantry staples and ones you likely already have on hand. I recommend stocking up on all of them because they’re common ingredients in many delicious fall recipes.

  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Spices: cinnamon and nutmeg
  • Baking Soda
  • Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Eggs
  • Oil
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Apples

How to Make Apple Bread:

This deliciously decadent bread is super simple to prepare and will make your kitchen smell like fall. Follow these simple steps to prepare 2 loaves.

  1. Prep: Preheat the oven to 350ºF and grease a 9×13 loaf pan and cover with parchment paper.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a medium bowl whisk the flour, sugar, spices, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together until well combined.
  3. Combine the wet ingredients: Whisk the eggs, oil, and vanilla together in a large bowl until smooth. Pour the dry mixture into the wet and use a spoon to combine (the mixture will be thick). Fold the chopped apples into the batter.
  4. Cook: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and place in the oven to bake for 50 to 55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.

Tips For Making the Best Apple Bread:

  • Once you’ve prepared the batter place it immediately in the prepared pan and then bake it. Letting the batter stand for a bit can sometimes cause the cooked bread to not rise all the way.
  • Don’t overmix the wet ingredients. Once the ingredients appear to be combined stop whisking them and move on to the next step. Over mixing can cause the bread to be too dense and heavy.
  • Be careful to not underbake your bread. Each oven has it’s own temperature settings so make sure to test the center with a toothpick. If it comes out clean then it’s ready, if not place it back in the oven for an additional 10 minutes.
  • Try to avoid opening the oven until you’re sure it’s fully baked. Sometimes a draft can cause the bread to fall if it’s not close to being done.

Options For Adding a Topping:

  • Vanilla Glaze: In a small bowl whisk together 1 cup of powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and 1 to 2 tablespoons (depending on how thick you want it) of heavy cream. Pour over the bread once it’s cooled.
  • Cream Cheese Frosting: Place 1/2 cup (1 stick) of unsalted butter at room temperature, 8 ounces of softened cream cheese, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 4 cups of powdered sugar into a mixer and combine until smooth. Spread a thick layer over the bread after it’s cooled completely.
  • Cinnamon Sugar: Place 1/4 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon in a small bowl and stir to combine. Sprinkle the mixture over the top of the bread before placing it into the oven.
  • Cinnamon Apple Butter: This simple spread will take this bread to the next level!

Tandoori Chicken

Tandoori Chicken is a classic Indian dinner that marinates chicken legs in a creamy yogurt base, blended spice mix and freshly squeezed lime juice then cooked in the oven. This its a MUST have dinner recipe!

There is something about using turmeric spices to create a delicious chicken dinner. If you love Indian food as much as I do try this Butter Chicken or this Slow Cooker Chicken Tikka Masala.

Easy Tandoori Chicken

Tender chicken meat on the inside covered by a light and hint of spicy flavoring on the outside. This chicken is irresistible and a hit in our family! The creamy marinade soaks into the chicken creating a flavorful and delicious chicken leg that falls right off the bone. Every bite is full of flavor and tastes AMAZING!

This chicken tandoori is perfect to have on a busy week night and ready quickly. Simply marinate the chicken legs earlier in the day or the night before. When ready to bake, place the chicken legs on a cooking rack over top a baking sheet and bake until cooked inside. These chicken legs will WOW your family and leaving you wanting more.

What is Tandoori Chicken?

Tandoori chicken is a popular Indian dinner. It is a main dish that is prepared by marinating the chicken in a yogurt and spice blend and then baked or roasted in a tandoor. A tandoor is known as a clay oven. Not everyone has a clay oven. Using a grill, electric or gas oven can also create the same tender chicken as the tandoor oven does.

A hot tandoor oven is a cylindrical shaped clay oven that roasts the chickens outside layer quickly. The tandoori chicken has a vibrant color because of the spices turmeric, chili powder and even food coloring is often added into the marinade. Together this is the perfect combination!

Chicken Tandoori Ingredients:

Simply combine all the ingredients together and create a beautiful red marinate that will coat the chicken. This marinade will soak into the chicken creating a delicious and flavorful chicken.

  • Yogurt: I used a plain Greek Yogurt for the creaminess and gives a thick consistency.
  • Lime: Juice from a fresh squeezed lime.
  • Chili Powder and Paprika: A hint of spice!
  • Turmeric: This is a blend of spices that help create that red color tone.
  • Garam Marsala: Make this homemade or purchase it already mixed together.
  • Garlic Cloves: Minced together
  • Chicken Legs: Bone-in, skinless chicken legs are what I used for this recipe. 

Bake Some Chicken!

The chicken is easy to prepare and bake. The oven is warmer than usual for baking chicken to help give the chicken leg a crisp outside with a tender inside. This combination is full of flavor and the chicken turns out to have a hint of spice with tender chicken.

  1. Marinate the Chicken: In a medium sized bowl combine the yogurt, lime juice, chili powder, paprika, turmeric, garam marsala, and garlic.  Add the chicken legs and let marinate for 1-2 hours.
  2. Bake the Chicken: Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Line a baking sheet with a wire rack and place the chicken on top.  Bake for 20 minutes and then flip the chicken baking for 20 more minutes until cooked throughout.

Why is Tandoori Chicken Red?

This tandoori chicken is a beautiful bright red that has vibrant colors from the spices that are used when marinating. Chili powder and cayenne pepper give it a nice red hue that makes this chicken stand out from the rest. Turmeric also adds to the coloring and gives it a vibrant look once it is baked.

Using less chili powder and cayenne pepper and more turmeric gives it a bright yellow or even orange coloring depending on how spicy you are wanting to make your marinade.

How Do you Make Tandoori Chicken Red?

Tandoori chicken is a classic dish that is served with a bright red coloring. Making your own turmeric can help you create the best red hue that you are looking for when baking your chicken.

  • Kosher Salt: 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic Powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Onion Powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Ground Ginger: 1 teaspoon
  • Paprika: 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric: 1 teaspoon
  • Cayenne Pepper: 1 teaspoon
  • Garam Masala: 1 Tablespoon
  • Cayenne Pepper: 1 teaspoon

How to Make Garam Masala Spice Mix:

If you have a love for Indian food these spices will already be in your pantry of seasonings. This is easier to create than purchasing the seasoning if you cannot find it in stores.

  • Cumin: 2 Tablespoons
  • Coriander: 1 tablespoon
  • Cardamom: 1 tablespoon
  • Ground black pepper: 1 tablespoon
  • Cinnamon: 2 teaspoons
  • Ground cloves: 1 teaspoons
  • Nutmeg: 1 teaspoon

Other Cuts of Chicken:

If you are looking for another cut of chicken rather than a chicken leg, simply use chicken breast or thigh to make the same chicken. Chicken breast tend to have a thicker and harder skin to bake. To help tenderize the chicken breast, take a fork or knife and poke small holes to allow for the marinade to soak into the chicken. This will help the chicken bake evenly and create a tender chicken inside.

What to Serve with Tandoori Chicken:

Tandoori chicken is a filling main dish that can be eaten alone with an extra squeeze of lime juice. Adding a few sides to this chicken dinner completes the meal and creates an Indian classic dinner. A few of my favorite side dishes are rice, a side of lettuce and/or bread to help with the heat from the chicken.

Tandoori Chicken is a classic Indian dinner that marinates chicken legs in a creamy yogurt base, blended spice mix and freshly squeezed lime juice then cooked in the oven. This its a MUST have dinner recipe!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain greek yogurt
  • juice from 1/2 lime
  • 1 Tablespoon chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon garam marsala
  • 3 garlic cloves minced
  • 3 bone-in skinless chicken legs

Instructions

  • In a medium sized bowl combine the yogurt, lime juice, chili powder, paprika, turmeric, garam marsala, and garlic. Add the chicken legs and let marinate for 1-2 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with a wire rack and place the chicken on top. Bake for 20 minutes and then flip the chicken baking for 20 more minutes until cooked throughout.
